Getting around
- From the airport
- Naha Airport sits inside the city — the Yui Rail monorail reaches Kokusai-dōri in about 15 minutes (¥260–370), one of Japan's easiest airport connections. There is no bullet train to or within Okinawa; the mainland shinkansen network doesn't reach the islands at all.
- Yui Rail (monorail)
- Naha's only rail line, running from the airport through downtown to Shuri Castle — great for the city core, but it doesn't reach the beach resorts further up the island.
- Rental car
- Essential for anything beyond central Naha — the famous beaches, Churaumi Aquarium, and northern Okinawa are only practically reachable by car or organized tour, since bus coverage is sparse and slow. An international driving permit is required.
- Buses & taxis
- City buses cover Naha but run infrequently and without English announcements in places; taxis are affordable relative to mainland Japan and useful for short hops. No tipping.
- Ferries to outer islands
- Tomari Port, a short taxi ride from downtown, runs ferries to the Kerama Islands (renowned snorkeling, ~35–50 min) — a genuinely worthwhile day trip if you have a spare day.

- Kokusai-dōri
- Naha's main tourist street — shops, restaurants, nightlife, and the Yui Rail all on your doorstep. The easiest first-timer base.
- Near Naha Airport / Yui Rail south end
- Convenient for early flights, quieter, slightly better value.

- Close to Shuri Castle, calmer and more residential, still on the Yui Rail line.
- Beach resorts north of Naha (day-base alternative)
- For a beach-first trip, consider basing further up the west coast (Onna or Chatan) and treating Naha as a day visit — but that requires a rental car.

- Okinawan culture is genuinely distinct from mainland Japan — Ryukyuan history, cuisine, and even some customs (like the emphasis on ancestor veneration and different funeral/tomb traditions) differ, so avoid treating it as generic "Japan."
- Shuri Castle is a rebuilt structure (the 2019 fire destroyed the main hall; reconstruction is ongoing) — respect any active construction areas and posted restrictions.
- Sun and heat matter more here than on the mainland — hydrate, use reef-safe sunscreen where snorkeling is involved, and expect stronger UV even in "mild" months.
- Carry your trash; public bins are scarce, same as the rest of Japan.

Very safe by global standards, though with real environmental factors mainland itineraries don't have: typhoons (mainly Jul–Oct), strong currents and jellyfish at some beaches (look for flagged, lifeguarded swimming areas), and serious summer heat. Crime against tourists is rare.

Can I take the bullet train to Okinawa?
No — Okinawa's islands are not connected to Japan's shinkansen or rail network at all. You'll fly in (about 2h40 from Tokyo) or take a long overnight ferry from Kagoshima or Osaka; flying is what almost everyone does.
Do I need a rental car?
For central Naha and Shuri Castle, no — the Yui Rail and walking cover it. For beaches, Churaumi Aquarium, and northern Okinawa, yes; public transit there is too sparse to rely on.
How is Okinawa different from mainland Japan?
Historically a separate kingdom (Ryukyu) annexed by Japan in 1879, Okinawa has its own cuisine, a slower pace, subtropical climate, distinct music and textile traditions, and visible remnants of both Ryukyuan and postwar American history — it reads as its own culture layered under a Japanese one, not just a beach extension of the mainland.
How many days do I need?
Two days covers central Naha (Shuri Castle, Kokusai-dōri, Naminoue Beach). Add three or more with a rental car to reach the aquarium and the best northern and outer-island beaches — Okinawa rewards a slower, resort-style pace over a packed sightseeing itinerary.
