A small Baroque town under a castle that held off an Ottoman army in 1552, with a minaret left over from the time it didn't. Two hours from Budapest, and the reason most people come is the valley of wine cellars twenty minutes' walk from the square.

Entry & visa
Hungary is in the Schengen Area: US, UK, Canadian, Australian and most other Western passports get 90 days in any 180 visa-free. Since 10 April 2026, the EU's Entry/Exit System takes your fingerprints and photo at your first Schengen border crossing instead of a passport stamp. ETIAS is not yet in force — the EU dropped its late-2026 target, so check the official site before flying.

Getting around
- Getting there
- Direct trains leave Budapest-Keleti roughly hourly and take just under two hours, for about HUF 2,500–2,800 (~$7.80–8.80). From Budapest airport, take the 100E bus to Deák Ferenc tér and the M2 metro two stops to Keleti — allow three hours door to door. Eger station is a 15-minute walk south of the centre.
- On foot
- The whole old town — Dobó István tér, the castle, the minaret, the Basilica and the Lyceum — fits in a 15-minute walk. The Valley of the Beautiful Women is about 20 minutes' walk west of the centre, mostly downhill on the way there and uphill on the way back.
- Buses & taxis
- Local buses cost HUF 400 (~$1.30) bought in advance or HUF 500 on board; you'll rarely need one. For the walk back from the wine valley after dark, ask the cellar or your guesthouse to call a local taxi.
- Day trips
- Egerszalók, with its white limestone 'salt hill' of thermal terraces and a spa beside it, is a short bus or taxi ride away. Szilvásvárad, north in the Bükk hills, has the Lipizzaner horse stud and the Szalajka valley walks.

- Old town (around Dobó István tér)
- Walk to everything; the castle and minaret are over your shoulder. Best for a one- or two-night stay.
- Valley of the Beautiful Women
- Guesthouses among the cellars. Stay here if the wine is the point and you'd rather not walk back after dark.
- Near the thermal bath
- The leafy streets around the bath park, a few minutes from the old town — quiet, and handy for a morning swim.
- Egerszalók
- For a spa break rather than a town visit; you'll need a car, bus or taxi to reach Eger.

- In the cellars, it's normal to taste a few glasses and then buy a bottle — or a liter filled from the barrel into a plastic bottle, which is how locals buy.
- Older Hungarians don't clink beer glasses. Clinking wine is fine, and in Eger it's expected.
- The 1552 siege is a point of real local pride. Bull's Blood is named after the legend that the defenders' red wine made the Ottomans think they were drinking bull's blood — people will tell you the story, and you should let them.
- Say 'jó napot' when you walk into a shop or cellar.
How to spend an trip to Eger
Eger is small enough to cross on foot in fifteen minutes; what shapes a visit is that the wine valley is best in the late afternoon and evening, so keep the sights for the morning.
One day does the town properly, with the evening in the cellars. It's possible as a day trip from Budapest, but the last good train back cuts the evening short.

Three days is more than the town needs; this plan uses the extra time for a bath and the countryside around it.

- Day 2A slow morning at the Eger Thermal Bath with the Turkish Bath added, then the Egerszalók salt hill in the afternoon.

Eger doesn't need five days, and pretending it does would waste yours. Treat it as a base for two or three nights, then move on.

Safety & common scams
Eger is a quiet, safe small town. The practical hazards are the uneven cobbles and steps around the castle, and the walk back uphill from the wine valley after a long tasting — take a taxi. Petty crime is rare.

- Unpriced cellar tabs — the occasional cellar doesn't post prices and adds up generously at the end. Ask the price per glass before you start.

Hungarian networks cover the town and the valley well; EU SIMs roam at home prices. If you're coming from outside the EU, buy a SIM or eSIM in Budapest before you travel — Eger has phone shops, but fewer and with shorter hours. Guesthouses and cafés have Wi-Fi.

How many days do I need?
One full day covers the castle, the Minaret, the Basilica and an evening in the Valley of the Beautiful Women. A second day adds the thermal baths and Egerszalók. It works as a long day trip from Budapest, but staying one night means you can taste in the cellars without watching the train timetable.
Day trip or overnight?
Overnight if you can. The train is about two hours each way, the wine valley is best in the evening, and the castle is quietest first thing — a day trip gets you neither.
Is the Valley of the Beautiful Women touristy?
Parts of it, yes: the cellars nearest the entrance and the restaurants around the car park. Walk further in and you'll find family cellars where the person pouring made the wine. Weekday evenings in season are the best balance of open doors and space.
What is Bull's Blood, actually?
Egri Bikavér is a red blend from the Eger region, usually built around Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch) with other red grapes. The cheap export versions gave it a poor reputation; in the valley, and at the better wineries, it's a serious wine.
