Getting around
- From elsewhere in Japan
- Hiroshima sits directly on the Sanyo Shinkansen line — about 1h20 from Osaka, 1h40 from Kyoto, and 4 hours from Tokyo. Hiroshima Airport also has domestic and a few international connections, with a ~45-minute limousine bus into the city.
- Streetcars (Hiroden)
- A flat ¥220 fare covers the whole tram network, including the line straight to the ferry pier for Miyajima. Tap an Icoca card or pay cash on board — one of Japan's most charming ways to get around.
- Ferry to Miyajima
- The JR ferry (covered by the JR Pass) or the Matsudai Kisen ferry both take about 10 minutes from Miyajimaguchi and give you the classic view of the floating torii gate from the water.
- On foot
- Central Hiroshima and Peace Memorial Park are very walkable and flat. Miyajima's town center is compact, though the hike up Mount Misen (or the ropeway) takes more effort.

- Peace Park / Hondori
- Central, walkable to the Peace Memorial and the main shopping arcade — the default first-timer base.
- Hiroshima Station area
- Best for onward shinkansen travel, slightly less scenic.
- Miyajima (overnight)
- Staying on the island after day-trippers leave means having the torii gate and deer-filled lanes almost to yourself at dusk and dawn.
Tipping & etiquette
- Peace Memorial Park and Museum call for a quiet, respectful demeanor — it's a memorial to civilian victims, not a typical sightseeing stop; keep voices low and follow posted photography restrictions inside the museum.
- On Miyajima, the resident deer are used to people but shouldn't be fed — signs ask visitors not to, and they will nibble at paper (including tickets and maps) left within reach.
- Stand on the right of escalators, matching Osaka/Kansai convention rather than Tokyo's left.
- Carry your trash; public bins are scarce even near major sights.
Safety & common scams
One of the safest and most easygoing cities in Japan, itself already an extremely safe country — walking anywhere in central Hiroshima or Miyajima at night is unremarkable. There is essentially no notable scam pattern targeting tourists here.

Do I need a visa?
Most Western passports (US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia) get 90 days visa-free as tourists, same as the rest of Japan.
Is visiting the Peace Memorial appropriate for kids?
The park itself and the eternal flame are suitable for all ages; the museum's exhibits are graphic and emotionally heavy, aimed more at older children and adults — many families choose to split up or have younger kids skip the museum interior.
Can I do Miyajima as a day trip?
Yes, easily — it's about 45 minutes total from central Hiroshima door-to-door via streetcar and ferry. Staying one night, though, lets you see the torii gate at sunset and again at dawn without the day-tripper crowds.
Is the tide important for the torii gate photo?
Very — at high tide the gate appears to float; at low tide you can walk out to it on the sand. Check tide tables before you go; both experiences are worthwhile but very different.
How many days do I need?
One full day for Hiroshima's Peace Memorial and okonomiyaki, plus one for Miyajima (or combine both into a long single day if time is tight). It fits naturally as a stop between Osaka/Kyoto and Fukuoka on a shinkansen itinerary.
