Cities
Two cities glued together by bridges: hilly, castle-topped Buda and flat, loud, café-lined Pest, with a river of hot springs underneath both. Grander than you expect, cheaper than Vienna, and no longer the bargain it was ten years ago.
A small Baroque town under a castle that held off an Ottoman army in 1552, with a minaret left over from the time it didn't. Two hours from Budapest, and the reason most people come is the valley of wine cellars twenty minutes' walk from the square.
Hungary's southern university city: Roman tombs under the pavement, a mosque turned church on the main square, and a porcelain factory turned arts quarter. Warmer and slower than Budapest, and almost free of tour groups.
