Effectively cashless, like the rest of Australia — tap a card or phone for everything, including trams. Card surcharges of 1–2% are common and must be disclosed. Melbourne is a little cheaper than Sydney across the board, most noticeably on accommodation, and its food scene delivers more at the mid-range: the city's migration history means genuinely excellent Vietnamese, Greek, Italian and Ethiopian food at prices well below a harbourside Sydney dinner.

Getting around
- From the airport
- Tullamarine has no train link. SkyBus runs to Southern Cross station every 10 minutes for about A$23 and takes 30 minutes. Taxis and rideshares cost A$60–85 and are slower in peak traffic.
- Trams
- The largest tram network in the world, and free within the CBD and Docklands Free Tram Zone — no ticket, no tap, just get on. Outside that zone you need a myki card (A$6, from stations and 7-Elevens); unlike Sydney, contactless bank cards do not yet work on Melbourne public transport, which catches visitors out constantly.
- Fares right now
- Victoria has halved public transport fares from 1 June 2026 until 1 January 2027, taking the daily cap from A$11.40 to A$5.70. Worth knowing while it lasts — and worth checking, because it is a temporary measure with a stated end date.
- Trains
- Suburban lines radiate from the City Loop and reach St Kilda's neighbours, the beaches and regional towns. Same myki card.
- On foot
- The CBD is a flat, walkable grid and the laneways are the point — you find them on foot or not at all. The Yarra paths and the Royal Botanic Gardens are pleasant walking too.

- Fitzroy & Collingwood
- The independent quarter — Brunswick Street bars, record shops, vintage stores and the best small restaurants. A tram from the centre.
- Carlton
- Italian Melbourne on Lygon Street, next to the university and the museum. Quiet and central.
- St Kilda
- Bayside, with a beach, a pier of penguins and faded seaside grandeur. Half an hour by tram; better in summer.

- You cannot tap a bank card on Melbourne public transport. You need a physical myki card, unlike Sydney. This is the single most common visitor mistake here, and inspectors do issue fines.
- Trams inside the Free Tram Zone need no ticket at all. Outside it, touch on — and on trams you don't need to touch off.
- The weather changes fast and dramatically. Locals carry a layer in summer for good reason.
- Coffee has a vocabulary: a 'magic' is a double ristretto with steamed milk in a small cup, and asking for one correctly earns approval.
- Australian rules football is close to a civic religion here between March and September. Having a team, any team, is a conversation starter.
- Acknowledgement of Country opens many public events and is meant seriously.
- Melbourne–Sydney rivalry is constant and mostly performative. Melbourne people consider their city more cultured; say so and you'll make friends.
Safety & common scams
Very safe, with low violent crime and a CBD that stays busy into the evening. Ordinary city precautions are enough. The genuine risks are environmental rather than criminal: extreme UV, as everywhere in Australia; heatwaves in summer that regularly exceed 40°C; and unpredictable weather that can swing 15°C in an afternoon. Beaches on the Mornington Peninsula and along the Great Ocean Road have serious rip currents — swim between the flags. Some outer areas around the CBD's northern edge feel less comfortable very late at night, which is about as strong a warning as this city needs.
Scams to know
- Travelling without a valid myki — not a scam, but authorised officers check regularly and fines are around A$100. Contactless bank cards do not work on Melbourne transport.
- Card surcharges — legal but must be displayed. Check before paying.
- Weekend surcharges — legitimate and disclosed on the menu; they cover legally required penalty rates.
- Great Ocean Road day tours — the cheapest ones spend ten hours on a bus for 90 minutes of coastline. Read the itinerary or stay overnight instead.
Emergency numbers: 000 for police, fire and ambulance.
Phone & internet
Strong 4G and 5G in the city and suburbs; coverage drops away on the Great Ocean Road and in regional Victoria. Telstra has the best rural reach if you're driving. Prepaid SIMs from A$30 for 30 days at any supermarket or airport, all supporting eSIM. Free Wi-Fi across the CBD, in libraries and at Federation Square.
First-timer FAQs
Melbourne or Sydney?
Sydney is the more spectacular city — the harbour and beaches are genuinely world-class scenery. Melbourne is the better city to spend time in: food, coffee, bars, galleries, live music and sport, at slightly lower prices. If you're flying this far, do both; they're an 80-minute flight or a cheap overnight train apart.
How do I pay for trams?
Inside the CBD Free Tram Zone, you don't — the trams are genuinely free with no ticket. Outside it you need a physical myki card (A$6 from any station or 7-Eleven) topped up with credit. Your contactless bank card will not work, which is different from Sydney and catches out most visitors.
Is public transport really half price right now?
Yes — Victoria halved fares from 1 June 2026, taking the daily cap from A$11.40 to A$5.70. It is scheduled to run until 1 January 2027, so check whether it's still in effect when you travel.
How many days do I need?
Three days covers the laneways, two or three neighbourhoods, a gallery and a market properly. Add a day for the Great Ocean Road, and ideally make that an overnight rather than a 12-hour bus day.
What's the weather actually like?
Unpredictable, genuinely. Melbourne can deliver 35°C and a cold southerly change in the same afternoon. Summers include heatwaves over 40°C; winters are cool and grey rather than freezing, around 6–14°C. Pack layers regardless of season.
